You’ve counted calories for days, your new holiday party dress looks perfect, you’re sporting a fresh new haircut, and yet…you just heard the words no woman ever wants to hear, even when they are spoken out of concern. “You look tired!” Well, of course you’re tired. You haven’t had a good night’s sleep in weeks, your schedule is packed with holiday cooking, cleaning, gift buying, work and social events, the kids are out of school, your relatives are coming for a few days…Let’s face it, the list goes on and on.
So how do you avoid looking tired, when clearly, the odds are against your having a lot of time to rest and recuperate until after the new year arrives. The secret to whether you look tired or rested often lies in your eyes, so that’s a great place to start with a little help from Mother Nature. Treating your eyes to some tender loving care doesn’t have to mean a trip to the spa or expensive beauty products. Some of the most effective treatments you can find are quick and easy, inexpensive and you probably already have most them in your pantry or fridge.
Green or Black Tea You’ll have refreshed eyes in the bag, when you try this natural remedy. Dip two teabags in water, green or black tea will do, and then place them in the freezer to chill for a few minutes. Remove the teabags from the freezer and find a quiet place to lie down for 10 minutes. Place the teabags on your closed eyes and relax. The bioflavonoids in the tea will help to soothe tired eyes and reduce inflammation.
Cucumbers The spa doesn’t have anything on you. One of the best home remedies for dark under eye circles is fresh from the garden. Cucumbers are very high in water content and can help soothe and hydrate your eyes and the sensitive area around them. Take a chilled cucumber and cut it into slices. Lie back and place the slices on your closed eyes. Now it’s time for you to chill. About 10 – 15 minutes should do the trick.
Strawberries Try this strawberry shortcut to brighter, healthier looking eyes. This refreshing little fruit is packed with antioxidants that can help reduce the look of puffiness and make your eyes appear brighter. Remove the tops of a few frozen strawberries and cut them into slices. Place the strawberries under your eyes and let them sit for about 5 minutes while you take it easy, then rinse.
Potatoes Even the lowly spud can play a part in bringing your tired eyes back to life. The moisture content in the potato will help to rehydrate the eye area reducing puffiness. Potatoes are also effective in eliminating dark circles under the eyes. Refrigerate a potato overnight or at least for two hours, then cut in slices. Place the cold potato slices on your closed eyes for around 10 minutes or until the slices are no longer cold.
Rose Water Aromatherapy meets natural healing when you employ rose water for a refreshing treatment for tired, strained eyes. Rose water helps to firm, tone and hydrate the skin. Place a few teaspoons of cool rose water in a small bowl then soak two cotton pads. Place the pads on your eyelids and leave on for about 10 minutes while you relax. The rose scent will also help relieve anxiety and stress, two enemies of bright, healthy looking eyes.
Nothing beats the basics. There is no replacement for eating healthy and getting enough rest. When life gets hectic, it’s even more important to remember the basics. Try to get at least 6 – 8 hours of sleep a night and take short breaks during the day to relax and decompress for five or ten minutes. Eat a balanced diet rich in nutrients and heavy on fruits and vegetables, as well as low fat dairy, lean meat, poultry and fish, and whole grains. Some of the best foods for healthy eyes are spinach, kale, oranges, green and red peppers, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, nuts and seeds, fish like salmon, tuna, mackerel and anchovies and of course carrots. Stay well hydrated, by drinking more water and less caffeine- and sugar-laden beverages. When you take care of yourself on the inside, your inner health and beauty will shine through, especially in your bright eyes.
