JACKSON, Miss – Thousands of high school students will flood the Mississippi Trade Mart Sat., May 7 to obtain their athletic physical for the coming academic year. The physicals are one of many ways Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center gives back to the community.
Physicals are available only to students scheduled through a coach or administrator making an appointment for his/her school. Forms approved by the Mississippi High School Activities Association are required but are made available to schools weeks in advance so that parents and guardians can sign permitting their student athlete be screened.
The physical includes a flexibility exam, a general health exam, an orthopaedic exam, a dental exam and eye test along with measurements of height, weight, blood pressure, and pulse. If warranted, cardiologists with echocardiograms and EKGs are on site to evaluate suspected heart conditions through a partnership with Baptist Health Systems, which also provides volunteer nurses, physical therapists and athletic trainers for the event.
In its 27 years of offering these screenings, MS Sports Medicine has ushered more than 100,000 high school (and some college) students through the process and averages 4,400 students annually in this one-day event.
Appointments are required due to volume and cannot be made for individuals.
To register a school for physicals, call 800-624-9168 or 601-354-4488 x 301 and leave a message.
