In case you missed it, the Pantone Color of the Year for 2019 is PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral – “An animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge.” – PANTONE®

Honestly, I really didn’t remember the Pantone Color of the Year for 2018, but I did a little digging and discovered it was called Ultra Violet, a deep purple tone described as “inventive and imaginative.” I think what caught my attention about this year’s color selection was the effort on the part of PANTONE® to lift our spirits and make us feel better and more positive about the year ahead. When our discourse is so fraught and our collective consciousness is so anxious, so unsettled and so negative in many ways, it says a lot about where we are as a society that a company known for standardizing the identification of color for a variety of industries, such as printing, colored paint, and fabric, feels compelled to comfort us with their color selection for the year.

PANTONE® writes, “Vibrant, yet mellow PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral embraces us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment. Sociable and spirited, the engaging nature of Living Coral welcomes and encourages lighthearted activity. Symbolizing our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits, it embodies our desire for playful expression.”

That’s a lot to put on the shoulders of one little color, but I applaud the company for trying to spread comfort and joy. Improving the nature and tone of our discourse by sowing seeds of peace and lightheartedness really is a noble undertaking that will take all of us to achieve.

In this issue, Well-Being has focused on a number of ways to improve the quality of our lives and those of our loved ones, kids to seniors. We want to help our readers navigate the challenges of the year ahead, from what it takes to stay physically fit, to eating right and understanding how what we eat affects our mood, nurturing the mental health of our kids and families and sharing the essentials of senior health. Our goal, like PANTONE’s Living Coral, is to contribute to a healthier social and emotional environment for the New Year where optimism and joy can flourish.

From everyone at Well-Being, let us wish you all a peaceful and joyous new year.
