The health and beauty industry thrives on our desire to hang on to our youth. We want smooth supple skin, shiny hair, and a trim body. We also want more energy, a sharp mind, and overall good health. That’s a pretty tall order, right? We might be hard pressed to find a magic commercial elixir that can do all that, and that also is affordable and accessible. But who needs a concoction in a bottle or jar, when all we have to do is turn on the tap. Yep, drinking just plain and simple H2O, AKA water, can accomplish all of this and more.
When you think about it, it makes perfect sense. Water is essential to every system in the body. When our bodies get enough water they function at their best – you could say, “all systems are a go.” When they don’t get enough…a lot can go wrong, and fast.
Our bodies are made up of between 55 to 75 percent water. Our blood is more than 80 percent water and our brains are more than 75 percent water. The liver, which is necessary to filter out the body’s toxins, is 90 percent water. Even the mouth, ears, nose and throat require moisture to function correctly. When you drink enough water the benefits just keep coming.
Clear skin Drinking water keeps your skin cleansed and hydrated. It helps flush out toxins and eliminates the dirt that clogs the pores of your skin, giving you a healthier glow. Drinking water also keeps your skin youthful and properly hydrated so it is less likely to dry out.
Improved skin tone Water helps to keep your skin tight and toned. When your cells contain enough water they become firm and tight, thus reducing the appearance of wrinkles for a smooth finish.
Natural weight loss Drinking water can actually help you to lose weight. Often, when you feel hungry, you are actually thirsty. When you drink water you feel fuller and may avoid between meal snacking. Replacing your usual carbonated or caffeine drinks with water, means less sugar or artificial sweeteners, fewer calories and cuts down on the caffeine jitters. Water is also less expensive, so it is healthy for your pocketbook too.
Glossy hair Drinking water hydrates the cells, and your hair is no exception. Drinking plenty of water can help make your hair naturally soft and silky.
Brainpower boost Water helps elevate your mood and increase brainpower. It is estimated that the brain makes up only about 1/50 of the entire weight of the body, but uses 1/20 of the blood supply. Drinking water increases cognitive function by delivering the oxygen the brain needs to function at its best. Dehydration can result in a lack of concentration and even confusion.
Stay cool Water regulates body temperature, through perspiration, cooling you down and preventing you from becoming overheated.
A healthier you While drinking enough water can make a big difference on the outside, it is also doing lots of good on the inside. Drinking water makes your blood thinner, leading to a faster blood flow and nourishment for your body’s cells. It lowers your blood pressure for a healthier heart and gives you much more energy. It aids in digestion, circulation, elimination, and the transfer and absorption of nutrients. There is no part of the body that doesn’t benefit from being well hydrated.
Many experts recommend 2.5 litres a day, or about 6–8 (8 oz.) glasses, while others suggest you take your body weight (in pounds), divide it in half and drink that many ounces. It’s important to remember that all bodies are different. Your water intake should be based on your weight, height, age and level of activity. When you are properly hydrated, your urine should be a light yellow color; and, you will produce around 6 cups of urine a day.
Sometimes just knowing that something is good for you is not enough to change your behavior, but drinking more water should be an easy sell. It can singlehandedly make you look younger, feel better, stay sharper, function more efficiently and stay healthier. Can you think of any other substance on earth that can do so much for such a great price?
