RIDGELAND, Miss – Following the biggest year of participation ever in Central Mississippi, the Get Ready to Run Kids’ One-Mile Fun Run, presented by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi, hit the pavement on Saturday, February 3 at Renaissance at Colony Park in Ridgeland. More than 1,420 students (up from less than 800 last year) in grades K-5 took to the streets in the culminating event of the fifth year of the Get Ready to Run School Program. This year’s participation was the highest ever, with 53 schools participating in the program.
The Get Ready to Run School Program introduces students to the benefits of running, physical fitness and healthy choices through seven lessons which encourage and teach the importance of healthy lifestyles and tips on running. Get Ready to Run lessons and activities were developed by health and wellness experts at Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi, in cooperation with the Mississippi Department of Education.
To encourage friendly competition and reward participation on race day, the top three schools with the highest percentage of fun run participants receive up to $2,000 for their schools’ P.E. programs. Schools are also encouraged to document their participation and success by preparing a Story Board. The school with the Story Board with the best health message receives $500 for their school’s P.E. program.
