Chalk it up to more conducive temperatures and lower humidity (hopefully), throw in some killer blue skies, and fall is just about the nicest time of year for fitness and community events. Our September/October issue of Well-Being typically has the largest Calendar of Events of the year, so we notice how many opportunities there are around the state to enjoy fall festivals, 5Ks, golf tournaments, other sporting events and fundraisers that are not only fun to attend, but that raise money for good causes of all kinds.
It occurred to us that everybody involved in organizing and conducting events that raise crucial dollars for everything from local pet shelters to cancer research, deserve special recognition and thanks for what they do. While contributions from wealthy individuals and large corporate donations are important, the backbone of charitable giving is the individual grassroots donor. They’re efforts make all the difference in seeing that crucial work is done – to find cures for disease, support family services, care for and protect vulnerable women and children, and so much more.
In this issue alone, our Calendar lists numerous events including those that benefit the following:
• Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi (Tom King Charity Golf Tournament and Mississippi’s Walk for Diabetes – Jackson and Hattiesburg)
• Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance (Ovarian Cycle – Jackson)
• Children’s Hospital of Mississippi (Sanderson Farms Championship PGA Event, Trustmark Pro-Am Golf Tournament and Mistletoe Marketplace)
• Extra Table (WellsFest)
• Mississippi Kidney Foundation (Michael Rubenstein Memorial Walk)
• Alzheimer’s Association (Metro Jackson Walk to End Alzheimer’s)
• Milk Run 5K (Mother’s Milk Bank of Mississippi)
• The Mustard Seed (RUNable $5 5K)
• Little Light House (Blast from the Past 5K & Fun Run)
• And many more across Mississippi communities
You have to love activities like these that give us a chance to get out and enjoy the great fall weather, keep active, share fellowship and help to fund great causes. Our apologies to any benefactors we didn’t mention. Please check out our September/October Calendar for events in your own neck of the woods and be sure to send us information about your upcoming event. (Remember, we need your information at least two and a half months prior to the event.)
